Making a meal plan or menu plan is a great help.  The plan lets your family know what to eat and what to look forward to.  Since it is a 'plan' you know what to buy at the store!  You just make your grocery list accordingly.  I like having the plan posted in my kitchen to remind me to defrost the meat!  Do you make meal/menu plans? Please share an example of a plan!

I know people that eat the same things over and over and over.  I don't know if they don't know how to make anything else or lack the creativity to whip up and try new and exciting dishes.  I have plenty of recipe books to look through for inspiration.  Pinterest is certianly enticing with all their lovely photos of things to make!  I have a "I'm a foodie" board.  See: http://pinterest.com/mya922/

Today's tip: Need inspiration?  Look through your child's school Lunch Menu for ideas!
Pick and choose through all the healthy ideas to create your own menu.  The guess work for choosing sides is already done for you.  ~Awesome~
Here are a couple of examples:

Teriyaki Chicken
Brown Rice
Roasted Broccoli and Peppers
Fresh Fruit

Chicken Pot Pie
Salad
Wheat Roll
Sliced Peaches

Find something you don't know how to make or want to mix up how you usually make it? You can search Kitchen Notes for the dishes, look in cookbooks, Google it, or Pinterest search it..

Okay so it's not a tip.  It's an awesome -must try-!  I found the idea on Pinterest.  It tried them tonight was excited to share: S'mores with Peeps.  I call them "Sm'eeps."  (Remember you heard the name Sm'eeps here first) :)  I microwaved them for 15 seconds before putting the top graham cracker on.

Sugar and Spice..have everything nice!  ;)
I love that I have an entire 3 shelf cabinet dedicated to spices.  I use all my store bought spices and I make my own too!
I have spices separated into a few sections. Shelf 1: The bottled/jarred spices are separated into sweet stuff for baking and such (cinnamon, pumpkin spice, anise seeds..).  Shelf 2: is for everyday cooking (garlic salt, cumino, red pepper flakes..).  I have all the bagged items on another shelf in the same cabinet (flour, sugar, bread crumbs..).  Shelf 3: I have boxed cake mixes and frosting that I get a good deal on when using coupons.  I also keep food coloring there, as well as my retro mustard, mayo and ketchup squeeze bottles.

I made a list of all the spices I have and included the expiration date.  I taped it on the cabinet door.  This way I know what I have & what I'm going to need to buy soon.

Tip: Organizing your spices will save time while cooking because you'll know what you have and where it is.

Tip Tuesday

My friends and family love sharing with me how much they saved on something due to coupons.  I love helping people get started on their couponing adventures.  I've even given friends their own organizer or binder to start them off and (of course) I give them the coupons I won't use.  Whenever someone asks how I coupon I use Walgreens as my example.  Anyone can see drugstores are overpriced for everyday items.  But not everyone knows how big you can score with coupons and sales they have.

Here's a quick tutorial on how I coupon at Walgreens:
I generally know how much items cost before going into any store, therefore, I know when something is a good deal.  I also know how much I'm willing to pay!!

Walgreens has a weekly ad/circular in the Sunday paper..it's also in the store.  Each month Walgreens has an in store coupon booklet located by the circulars in the store.  There is not 1, not 2 but 3!! ways to save with coupons.  #3 being manufacture coupons.  Now that you know where to get coupons, you now need to know you can use all 3 at once!  Using more than one coupon for one item is called "stacking."  You can sometimes get items free or for less than a buck doing this.

What's great about Walgreens ads is the little red boxes that say "Coupon Savings in most Sunday Papers."  That will help out coupon newbies.  I am a little nutty and remember what items I have coupons for in my coupon binder.  My nutty-ness helps me spot those good deals faster.

The ads also spell it out for you if you use their in store coupons.  Example: This last Sunday's ad says Mucinex Fast-Max 6oz.
Sale price $9.99 - In store coupon $1 = Final Price $8.99

Register Rewards is free money for your next trip for buying specific products.  For example, this last Sunday's ad says Carmex Moisterizing Lip Balm .15oz Lime Twist or Vanilla
Sale price $1.50 - Register Rewards $1.50 = Like getting purchase FREE!
After your receipt prints, there will be a coupon for $1.50 to use next time you come into Walgreens.  They expire somewhat soon so don't toss that free money away!

For the love of a good deal!! Please check out the clearance section before venturing into the store for your list of items.  There have been times I picked up items for next to nothing that's with or without coupons!

Noticed how I mentioned a list?  You do not want to shop off your list when at Walgreens unless of course it's a deal too good to pass up..such as the clearance section.  Also, make sure your list is detailed!  If you have a coupon for a 20oz soda make sure you write down that ounce size.  If you have a coupon for the lavender scent laundry soap write that down.  You don't want to be at the register when you realize that coupon won't work because you didn't pick up the correct product.

Well, I hope these tidbits help you.  If you can scope out the deals at Walgreens you can scope out the deals anywhere.

 Over-the-Door Large Pantry Rack
Tip: More storage for your pantry doesn't have to be expensive at all.

Our pantry is full of fabulous goodies.  While shopping for canning supplies one fine day, I ran into the beauty pictured above.  Okay okay, it's not beautiful but having more storage for food is.  The top shelf I use for baggies and foil, another for coffee and the filters, yada yada yada.  I found the over the door pantry organizer at Walmart.  I loved the idea so much I bought 2!  One for my kitchen pantry, one for my 'under the stairs closet.'

Tip Tuesday

Using baking spray on your glass bakeware may leave residue behind if it isn't cleaned properly.

Tip: Spray oven cleaner on your glass bakeware when it's in the sink, let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.  Repeat if necessary.

Tip Tuesday

My husband likes to take breakfast to-go and doesn't always remember to bring in his used dishes to be cleaned.  Think: a cup that had a protein shake in it left in a black car in the triple digit Texas heat for a few days.  Stink-y!

Tip: When Walgreens has their paper plates, and plastic cups on sale for less than a buck (with coupon) BUY 'EM!  They come in handy whether you have a forgetful husband like mine..or if you dislike doing dishes every single day..like me.

Tip Tuesday

If there is a good deal at Target I'm there picking it up.  You would think I just got a present in the mail when you see how excited I get seeing the Target booklet of coupons sitting in my mailbox.  At Target they let you stack coupons; that means you can use the Target coupon + a manufacture coupon for an item.  Meaning big savings.  For example, GoGurt is $2.25, you have a GoGurt Target coupon for $.50 off + you have a GoGurt manufacture coupon for $1 off.  You pay $.75!  Not bad, huh?

Tip: Find ways to stack coupons where you shop.

Why spend money on 'Tupperware' went reusing food containers does the same job?

I haven't spent money on food storage in years!  I learned my lesson..they get lost.  Husband takes a lunch in a good piece of tupperware..then I never see it again.  Potlucks..take food in a nice lidded bowl and DOH! leave it behind.  Some lunchmeat comes in decent reusable containers.  Butter and Cool Whip containers work great too.

Tip: Reuse containers for 'Tupperware.'

It's Tip Tuesday!

Sunday mornings you will find me at my kitchen table with the Sunday paper, my coupon binder, a pen, a calculator and a notepad.  I'll clip coupons first, put them in my coupon binder then look at the circulars for good deals, while matching my coupons and make a list of things to buy.  My meal plan for the week comes from the good deals I get at the stores.  I'm not like the 'Extreme Coupon' show stars but I have had a guy say "I like the way you shop" when he saw my grocery bill whittle down after I handed over my coupons.  I'd love for the entire store to give me an applause, I'm working on that.

Tip: With a little planning you can save big.
